Why Achieve Alpha?  Continued

Think about it. You work all day, rush to make your scheduled appointment and have several things remaining on your “To Do” list. Can you remember everything you intend to ask your doctor? If having alpha frequencies playing softly in their reception area or access to a light and sound unit immediately before treatment was available, would you take advantage of it? Being relaxed, yet mentally alert with increased focus on the task at hand would certainly benefit both the client and the medical professional. The next time you schedule an appointment, mention this technology. Share what you have learned. Oftentimes medical professionals are not aware of the benefits from utilizing these instruments.

Jocelyn Roland, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in the psychological services division of a major Southern California law enforcement agency. Dr. Roland utilizes light and sound during treatment primarily for general stress reduction. She also uses light and sound to reduce anxiety and phobic disorders through adjunctive use of this technology to therapy and systematic desensitization. In still other endeavors, Dr. Roland uses light and sound for sleep disorders, learning and memory, and general relaxation.

Dr. Roland and I began working on finding new ways of utilizing light and sound for the benefit of police officers. In a three month study, we invited personnel from the communications division (radio and emergency radio and telephone operators) of a local law enforcement agency to participate. Thirty-five 911 Emergency Operators allowed us to measure their “base-rates” before and after experiencing light and sound sessions. These base rates measured their heart rate, body temperature, left and right brain states and left and right galvanic skin responses. Because these operators are under tremendous pressure to think fast and act quickly, our goal in this study was to see if using light and sound during breaks would enhance their relaxation and coping skills while improving their focus. We also included a variety of music and environmental sounds that focused on meditation, visualization and guided imagery techniques that could be played in conjunction with the light and sound sessions. These 911 Operators found listening to relaxing music while experiencing light and sound sessions so beneficial that 911 trainees began receiving light and sound orientation while still attending classroom instruction. The program itself was rated excellent by the participants, with everyone experiencing greater control over stress than before.

Mind States by Michael Landgraf

One clinical psychologist submitted observations concerning her use of light and sound instruments as an adjunctive tool in her counseling with police officers. As you probably realize, this psychologist’s client population is a skeptical one. It took real results for them to accept light and sound. The psychologist utilized light and sound in her treatment of officers suffering from overwork, burn-out, post-traumatic stress, shift changes (interrupting sleep patterns) and officers studying for promotional exams.
