Why Achieve Alpha?  Continued

Mind States by Michael Landgraf

Examples of using light and sound to overcome test anxiety include Jocelyn Roland, Ph.D., and her experience when preparing to complete her doctorate in psychology and Janet Davis, when she was preparing for the California State Bilingual Teacher certification exam. Both women have excelled in academics, but both were rather stressed as they prepared for their exams.

I remember talking to Jocelyn a few days before her test. She said she was ready, but the usual anxiety she had come to expect was not there. She felt almost as if she did not care, which was hardly the case. Jocelyn realized the difference was not experiencing any anxiety. She was successful in passing her examinations and has continued to utilize light and sound as a means of controlling daily stress.

Janet, in comparison, was experiencing test anxiety for the first time because she was having trouble acquiring enough fluency in Spanish to pass the state exam for bilingual certification. After incorporating light and sound into her studies, she first noticed a decrease in the physical symptoms associated with test anxiety and the accompanying mental confusion. Then Janet noticed an immediate increase in her ability to retain new information. She found that her method of studying with light and sound made retaining and retrieving test information more effective and took less effort than when not utilizing light and sound. Janet was also successful in passing her certification exam and she too, continues to utilize light and sound in her daily life.

Most teachers that I have worked with invariably take the light and sound instrument home for their personal use. Steve Brager, Janet Davis and Lyne Avignone-Young, all elementary school teachers in the L.A. Unified School District, use light and sound at home for different reasons. Steve uses light and sound to relax and increase his focus, believing this has helped him become a better teacher. Janet uses her instrument while studying new material and working at her computer. Lyne utilizes her unit to help lower her blood pressure and to relax. Incidentally, Lyne also uses her unit to help her son fall asleep at bedtime.
