Why Achieve Alpha? Continued
Other items will also be needed. Bring your favorite MP3s and CDs so you and others can enjoy them. Visit your local retail discount store and purchase a couple of inexpensive CD players (wait for sales!). I have seen some selling for as little as nine dollars and they include headphones. Right now you are undoubtedly thinking sure, a few of us will take the initiative and get burned. The equipment will be disappear. Okay, I too have seen that happen and it really stinks. But I have also seen the long term effects of what can happen when a small group of employees take the initiative, attempting to help themselves and their co-workers have a better place to go at break time.
Employees appreciate any improvement that affects them directly, that they can personally enjoy, especially on a daily basis. The few co-workers who seem intent on bashing or criticizing your efforts (and every workplace seems to have those) will be silenced by others who may at first be surprised, but ultimately appreciative for having a comfortable area to call a break room. Your employer will take notice. Good things can happen. All you need is to have a little trust, a little patience and the strength to get things started.
Oftentimes an employer cannot afford a professional to conduct stress management work-shops or relaxation areas are not possible because of space. For these situations, having access to light and sound technology at your workstation can prove to be extremely beneficial. Light and sound not possible? Use 515 MP3 sessions. All you need is the 515’s alpha session (or the beta session when in need of a little motivation), played through your computer. The 515 will not affect any computer program that you are running. And remember, when doing a 515 session, the volume is kept low. No one will be inconvenienced by your using to a session. Since 1995, individuals have utilized the 515 in this manner and have told me that it has helped them maintain focus on what they were working on, has made doing their paperwork easier to complete and has kept them from “totally losing it” when problems arose.
One clinical psychologist working in the psychological services division of a major Southern California law enforcement agency was using the 515 every day to relax. She had it running in her office when she was alone or with particular clients. All of that changed when she let her front office staff use the unit on a particularly stressful day. They now keep it up front with them, and have it going most of the day for relaxation purposes.
A few years back I used the 515 in a major furniture and sofa factory showroom. Not in the area where the customers shop, but where the employees do their paperwork. The alpha session was run throughout the workday. Over the course of several weeks, the store manager made several interesting observations. There was less bickering amongst the employees. Paperwork was completed in a timely manner with less mistakes. The day felt like it went by faster. They made more sales. The 515 is still being used by that company.
